Meet the Owner
Onyx Percussion Co, founded by Ethyn Sappingfield, is more than just a drum pad company. It is the result of years of passion, discipline, and a relentless pursuit of better. Growing up Ethyn wanted to play Baseball in High-School but then saw drums on a field and in that set tone he followed his what is now his dream in percussion. Ethyn experienced firsthand what worked, what didn’t, and what was missing from the tools drummers rely on every day. Practice pads are supposed to build skill, precision, and confidence. In the mist of all of that they often fall short in feel, durability, or consistency. Instead of settling for what was available, Ethyn chose to create something better.
What started as a personal challenge to design a pad that truly responds like a real drum while lasting through intense practice quickly evolved into a business with a clear purpose. Drumz was built to serve drummers who take their craft seriously, from beginners learning fundamentals to advanced players refining every detail of their technique. Every product is carefully thought out, tested through real playing conditions, and refined until it meets a level of performance that isn’t just acceptable. It’s dependable.
Ethyn’s approach to building his brand is rooted in authenticity. He isn’t designing for drummers he is a drummer. That perspective drives every decision, from material selection to construction methods to overall design. There’s no cutting corners, no chasing trends, and no compromising on what matters most: feel, response, and longevity. The goal isn’t to make something that looks good on a shelf. The goal is to create something that earns its place in a player’s daily routine.
At the heart of Drumz is a philosophy that defines everything the company stands for: “Quality isn't the goal, it's the set standard. Customers are not second, they are the mission.” This isn’t just a statement. It's the main commitment. Quality isn’t treated as a bonus feature or a marketing point; it’s the baseline expectation for every product that leaves the workshop. And customers aren’t seen as transactions. They are the reason the brand exists in the first place.
ONYX is about more than equipment. It's about trust. It’s about giving drummers confidence that when they practice, they’re using something built to help them improve, not hold them back. It’s about consistency, reliability, and respect for the craft of percussion. As the brand continues to grow, the mission stays the same: to raise the standard for what drummers expect and to deliver products that reflect the dedication of the people who use them.
